## **Master Bill of Materials (BOM) & Parametric Assembly Template**
**Product:** Traditional Broomcorn Flat Broom
**[Botanical](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Botany&oldid=1375552838) Material:** *Sorghum bicolor var. technicum*
**1. Handle & Anchoring Sub-Assembly**
**Sequence:** Step 1
**Traditional** **Specifications:**
**Length:** 12" (Minimum) to 60" (Maximum) | *Traditional Default baseline: 42"*
**Diameter:** 0.75" (Minimum) to 1.5" (Maximum) | *Traditional Default baseline: 1.0"*
**Anchor Hole Offset:** 1.5" to 4.0" from distal end | *Default baseline: 3.0"*
**Requirements:**
Handle must be milled.
A transverse anchor hole must be drilled at the specified distal offset.
**Constraints:**
*Structural:* The anchor hole is the single point of failure. The binding wire MUST be threaded through this hole; otherwise, kinetic sweeping friction will cause the broomcorn matrix to slide off the handle.
*Dependency:* Handle diameter dictates tension; thicker handles (e.g., 1.5") require the operator to increase tensile pull on the wire to prevent slippage.
**2. Core ("Inside") Broomcorn**
**Sequence:** Step 2
**Specifications:**
**Mass:** 4 oz (Minimum) to 14 oz (Maximum) | *Default baseline: 8 oz*
**Grade:** Lower-grade, thicker-stemmed stalks used for interior spine/stiffness.
**Requirements:**
Panicles must be mechanically threshed to be 100% stripped of seeds (speed limited to 13–21 m/s).
Fibers must undergo hydrostatic immersion (water bath) for 5 to 45 minutes to achieve elastic pliability.
**Constraints:**
*Dependency:* Stiffness is inversely proportional to stalk thickness. Heavy-duty brooms require thicker stalks, which subsequently demand longer hydration times (up to 30 minutes) to bend without snapping.
*Structural:* Exceeding ~22 m/s during threshing causes catastrophic micro-fractures in the cellulosic structure, leading to breakage.
**3. Shoulder Broomcorn**
**Sequence:** Step 3
**Specifications:**
**Mass (Total):** 3 oz (Minimum) to 10 oz (Maximum) | *Default baseline: 6 oz*
**Requirements:**
Total mass must be divided perfectly symmetrically into two bundles.
Bundles are applied to the lateral sides of the core.
Excess interior stalks must be blunt-cut after binding.
**Constraints:**
*Dependency:* The shoulder mass strictly dictates the width of the final fan shape of the broom.
**4. Hurl ("Outside") Broomcorn** (check out our [Raw Materials](https://www.broomsquires.com/product-category/the-mercantile/raw-materials/) section in The Mercantile.)
**Sequence:** Step 4
**Specifications:**
**Mass:** 6 oz (Minimum) to 16 oz (Maximum) | *Default baseline: 10 oz*
**Fiber Length:** 12" (Minimum) to 24" (Maximum) | *Default baseline: 17"*
**Requirements:**
Applied as the exterior layer over the core and shoulders for dust-trapping efficiency and cosmetic finish.
**Constraints:**
*Dependency (Capacity):* If total combined broom mass (Core + Shoulder + Hurl) is exceptionally high (e.g., 2.5 lbs), the standard Shaker vise jaw aperture must be widened to prevent crushing the fibers.
*Dependency (Length):* Extra-long hurl fibers (e.g., 24") mandate that the lowest row of ligation stitching be spaced further down the broom body to prevent premature splaying.
**5. Binding Wire**
**Sequence:** Step 5 (Applied concurrently with Steps 2-4)
**Specifications:**
**Wire Gauge:** 16 AWG (Thick/Minimum) to 22 AWG (Thin/Maximum) | *Default baseline: 18 AWG*
**Requirements:**
Must be threaded through the anchor hole and wrapped using a foot-treadle winder.
Must be tacked off securely against the wooden handle.
**Constraints:**
*Structural (Hydration):* Wire must only be applied to wet broomcorn. Applying 18-gauge wire tension to dry broomcorn will snap the stalks.
*Structural (Curing):* The permanent mechanical lock of the broom is achieved as the wet cellulosic fibers shrink during drying, naturally increasing the radial tension of the wire.
**6. Ligation (Stitching) Twine**
**Sequence:** Step 6
**Specifications:**
**Sewing Rows:** 2 (Minimum) to 6 (Maximum) | *Default baseline: 3 rows*
**Stitch Spacing (Vertical):** 1.0" (Minimum) to 2.5" (Maximum) | *Default baseline: 1.25"*
**Requirements:**
Twine must be heavily waxed.
Matrix must be laterally compressed in a Shaker vise during stitching.
**Constraints:**
*Structural (Lubrication):* Unwaxed twine will experience extreme abrasive drag against the silica-rich sorghum fibers, causing it to snap during the pull or fray and fail prematurely.
*Structural (Hydration):* If ligation occurs while the broomcorn is too dry, the needle will shatter the fibers.
*Dependency (Mass):* High-mass brooms require an upgrade to 4 or 5 rows of stitching to maintain a flat, Shaker-style profile.
**7. Finishing & Desiccation**
**Sequence:** Step 7
**Specifications:**
**Trimming:** Distal sweeping edge sheared flat via guillotine.
**Embellishments:** Optional hanging loop and/or Shaker hood.
**Requirements:**
Broom must be moved to a drying kiln to induce cellular shrinkage.
**Constraints:**
*Structural (Moisture):* The broom must be completely desiccated before packaging. If the interior core retains moisture for 72 hours, fungal rot will develop, rendering the product defective.
